I cannot believe that it’s already October. 2017 has truly flown by, and we only have a few months left! I wanted to start writing monthly goals to keep myself on track – and for you to keep me on track as well. It’s important to set goals for yourself, both short-term and long-term.
Obviously, monthly goals are short-term. Jotting down things to accomplish during the month will help keep you motivated and productive. Not only that, you feel extremely accomplished at the end of the month when you see how much you’ve done!
Now, onto my October monthly goals. P.s. read until the end of the post for a little surprise 😉
Goal #1: Read before lecture & take pre-lecture notes
I made a goal at the beginning of the quarter to always read ahead and take pre-lecture notes before arriving at class. It’s almost the end of week two, and I got to say, I’m doing pretty well. In my first two years of college, I never read or looked over the posted lecture slides before class. Let’s just say that I didn’t do as well as I wanted to because of those bad habits.
I am extremely busy this quarter – with academics, social life, work, and my internship. That’s what made me want to read ahead for class. I knew that if I didn’t, I would fall extremely behind.
In the two weeks that I have been reading and taking notes ahead of time, I have felt really good about where I stand in all of my classes. I come to class prepared, and I already know what my professor is going to discuss. Now, I rarely look at the slides and feel panicked to write down the information. Instead, I simply listen to what my professor is saying and jot down concepts that he’s emphasized.
If you’re in college, I would 100% recommend having this goal too. It’s going to be a challenge to keep this up for the rest of the month which is why I am making this a monthly goal. I’ll update you on how it goes. Fingers crossed!
Goal #2: Publish a weekly post
Another one of my monthly goals is to publish on my blog weekly. I like to consider my blog a “side hustle,” but it’s a side hustle that I love. I feel passionate writing about what I know, what I love, and sharing it with you all. With my busy schedule, I know that coming up with interesting content each week, writing, and publishing will be difficult but I want to put in the work for you and myself.
A topic that I am particularly passionate about is beauty. Since I can remember, I have been a beauty junkie and have religiously watched beauty gurus on YouTube. Michelle Phan and JuicyStar07 were my favorites. I wasn’t allowed to start wearing makeup until High School but trust me, when that time came around, I set my heart out to collect as many products as possible.
Now, I have a whole collection and it’s still growing! I try my best to keep up with the newest releases and try out products enough to review for you all. If you have any makeup or beauty recommendations for me to try, please let me know!
Goal #3: Get at least seven hours of sleep each night
Okay, I know that this goal sounds a little ridiculous. You might be thinking, “seven hours of sleep is a goal?!” In my case, it truly is. I recently bought a FitBit to track my health better and one of the features is a sleep tracker. I always knew that I didn’t have the best sleeping habits, so I was quite interested to see how much sleep I was getting each night.
After tracking my sleep for a couple of weeks, my average night’s sleep is exactly seven hours. I would like to keep it this way so that I feel well-rested and not get burnt out! Some nights, though, I get around five hours of sleep. This makes seven hours of sleep feel like heaven, but ultimately, it’s hard to catch up on a good night’s rest.
Additionally, I’ve had sleeping issues in the past. There was a brief period where I was an insomniac and even prescription medicine could not help my sleeping schedule. I was supposed to complete a sleep study, but never got around to it. Luckily, my sleeping habits have turned around and I am slowly getting better. I would like to keep that good streak going and that is why sleep is one of my monthly goals!
How I Keep Myself Accountable
Although having goals is ambitious and motivating, it means nothing if you cannot keep yourself accountable in achieving these goals. For years, I have been creating and maintaining monthly goals. Through my experience, I have gathered some tips and tricks to keep myself as accountable as possible and actually follow through with all of my goals.
1. Don’t make too many goals
When you are brainstorming and writing down your goals, it’s easy to get carried away. When I first started writing monthly goals, I would have a list of ten goals to complete. Most of these goals were not of substance, and the list haunted me for the entire month.
Over time, I kept narrowing down the number of goals I made each month. Now, I set myself at a comfortable number: three. Three goals with substance and three goals that are realistic. It’s important that I choose goals that affect me on a daily basis and can work on little by little.
2. Write your goals down & display it where you can see it
This goal may seem obvious and self-explanatory, but it doesn’t hurt to mention it once again. I like to write my goals down at the beginning of the month on a large piece of paper and make it look pretty. It may sound trivial to say that I want to make my goals list “pretty,” but I think that it makes my list more personal.
It’s also extremely important to display your list where you can see it. Like, really see it. I like to keep my list posted above my desk in which I do all my school work. Since I spend so much time at my desk, I know that I will always see my list. This reminds me to keep track of what I need to do and keeps me motivated to complete my goals.
3. Share your goals
Sharing your goals is important because you now have an extra person to keep you accountable. I like to share my goals with my boyfriend and now, you! I recommend sharing your goals with someone that you trust and is reliable. They can keep you in check if they see you slipping.
You’ve made it to the end of the post! As promised, here is your surprise: a goal-writing printable!
What are your October monthly goals? Let’s share!
