I love listening to podcasts – especially when I am at work. There is something about it that makes me feel so inspired yet relaxed at the same time. Over the last few years, I have found myself listening to the same ones over and over.
I listen to a mixture of podcasts ranging from comedy to educational. When I am feeling glum, I listen to the comedy genre and when I feel unmotivated, I try to listen to the educational ones. My preferred app for listening to podcasts is Apple Podcasts, but I also like SoundCloud depending on where it is streamed.
If you have never listened to a podcast before, I would highly recommend it. There is a genre for everybody and you are bound to find one that interests you and keeps you coming back for more. In the meantime, I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorites!
Shane and Friends
Shane and Friends is one of the first podcasts I had ever listened to. In fact, he was one of the first YouTubers I watched when I first started browsing the world wide web. Shane is incredibly funny and never fails to make me laugh. Additionally, he is also very motivating. His life journey is admirable and I look up to him in many different ways.
Shane and Friends is a light-hearted show and appeals to a wide audience. Typically, each show is split into to parts: the first part is general whereas the second part features a special guest. And let me tell you, I love the special guests. As a YouTube junkie, I like hearing about the different sides of YouTubers that Shane and Jessie bring out. I have been listening to this show since the very beginning when Lauren was the co-host and they played the intro song off of Shane’s phone.
I would recommend this show 100% but take note: this show contains foul language and mature content. If you are sensitive to those type of things, proceed with caution. Other than that, listen to the podcast here!
Jenna and Julien Podcast
Like Shane Dawson, I have been following Jenna Marbles (Jenna Mourey) for years. In my eyes, she is a comedy queen and her humor is so unique it can make anyone laugh. About a month ago, I started watching Jenna’s videos and remembered why I fell in love with her in the first place. Then, I found out she had a podcast: the Jenna and Julien Podcast.
To make things better, her show features her boyfriend, Julien! He’s equally as hilarious and putting the two of them together makes for a great show. This show has many comedy elements, but they occasionally like to touch on more serious topics. Whichever genre they choose to discuss, I am always open ears. Even if you are not a fan of Jenna’s videos, the podcast shows a different side of her which appeals to a vast majority of people.
So if you are into music trivia, controversial topics, or fun games, this show is perfect for you. You can listen to the podcast here!
TED Talks Daily
TED Talks Daily features TED talks posted on the TED page. If you have never heard of TED before, it stands for “technology, entertainment, and design.” There are so many motivational and educational talks that you can listen to, and the good news it, most of them are fairly short.
Some talks that I have been listening to have been about Khmer culture, how to keep motivated, and progressive learning. I find that when I am in a rut, whether that be academically or creatively, I can listen to a talk and automatically feel empowered. There’s not much else to say besides, “you got to check this out for yourself.” I know that it sounds cheesy, but it’s true. I never thought I would be the person to listen to this type of show, but now I am hooked.

Vox’s The Weeds
As a busy college student, I don’t have much time to keep up with the news. I saw a few Vox videos on my Facebook new feed and always took the time to watch them. They are educational and always end with a “call to change.” It’s a good news source if you need to be updated with what’s happening around the world without having to read many articles.
Vox’s The Weeds is an hour-long podcast that discusses one piece of current news. The latest one that I listened to was about the whole Harvey Weinstein fiasco. As someone who has been sexually harassed, I understand a bit about what these women are going through. I am glad that women are finally coming forward and supporting each other. The Hollywood industry is manipulative and sexist and I am happy that it’s finally being exposed.
